Congressman Roscoe Bartlett Addresses the March for Life
Op Ed in The Hill Argues 110th Congress Can End Debate Over Embryonic Stem Cell Research
Washington, Jan 22 -
Congressman Roscoe Bartlett today spoke to thousands of pro-life supporters who converged on the Mall in Washington, DC for the 35th Annual March for Life. The march laments the anniversary of the Roe. V. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. Below is a statement of Congressman Bartlett. It is also available upon request as an mp3 file.
“This is Congressman Roscoe Bartlett.
“This is the 16th Consecutive year that I’ve been privileged to address the March for Life Rally in Washington, DC and welcome Marylanders who share in our struggle to protect the life of unborn children.
“There is encouraging news.
“Just last week, my hometown paper the Frederick News Post reported that there were fewer abortions last year than in the past 30 years.
“I wrote an article published today in The Hill newspaper http://thehill.com/op-eds/the-110th-congress-can-end-debate-about-embryonic-stem-cell-research-2008-01-22.html and reported on scientific advances that have ended the argument that the life of human embryos must be sacrificed to advance stem cell research. Scientists in the United States and Japan have produced stem cells from adult skin cells with the same ability of embryonic stem cells to form every type of human tissue. It is a phony political argument that President Bush and other pro-life supporters are blocking embryonic stem cell research. President Bush signed an Executive Order, based upon legislation that I worked on for six years, that provides federal funding for stem cell research that does not create or destroy human embryos.
“More successes advancing a culture of life will end the terrible tragedy of legal abortion in our country that has ended the lives of 50 million unborn children.”
