Rep. Roscoe Bartlett Defends the Appalachian Regional Commission
Washington, Jun 27, 2007 -
Congressman Roscoe G. Bartlett (MD-6) joined a bipartisan majority to save the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) by voting against an amendment presented by U.S. Representative Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) that would have eliminated all federal funding for ARC for fiscal year 2008.
The mission of the ARC is to develop the economy and quality of life in Appalachia, which is home to nearly 23 million people spread across 410 counties, including Washington, Garrett, and Allegany counties. Known as a “region apart,” Appalachia falls behind national standards in several areas, including unemployment, income, education, and poverty.
“I am pleased to continue my support for the ARC,” said Congressman Roscoe Bartlett. “ARC has played an integral role in the continued development of western Maryland by funding over 100 local programs and initiatives since 2003.”
Since its creation in 1965, ARC has reduced the number of severely distressed counties by more than 65%, cutting the poverty rate by one-half, and creating 1.6 million jobs.
The ARC has funded over 100 local programs and initiatives in Washington, Allegany and Garrett counties in Maryland. Recipients of grants included: Allegany Business Center at Frostburg State University; Hagerstown Community College Nursing and Allied Health Education and Training Program; Garrett County Economic Development Initiative; Route 220 Industrial Park Development Plan; and the Family Crisis Resource Center Emergency Shelter (Cumberland).
