Congressman Roscoe Bartlett Emphasizes the Importance of Getting Money Out of Washington to Stimulate the Economy
House Overwhelmingly Approves Economic Stimulus Package, H.R. 5140
Washington, Jan 29 -
After voting for the economic stimulus package, H.R. 5140, Congressman Roscoe Bartlett said, “I am hopeful the Senate will quickly follow the lead of the House and move money OUT of Washington, DC and into the hands of people who will spend it much more wisely than government bureaucrats. That is the best part of the economic stimulus package approved today. I am also pleased that a significant portion of the money in this package is directed to provide tax relief to small businesses so that they can create jobs.”
Congressman Bartlett noted, “Small businesses are the engine of our economy. Small businesses represent more than 99 percent of all employers, employing 51 percent of private-sector workers and 40 percent of workers in high-tech jobs. Small businesses produce 60 to 80 percent of all the new jobs.”
Congressman Bartlett cautioned, “Senators need to remember that calling a policy proposal a stimulus doesn’t mean that it will actually strengthen the economy. The federal government will be borrowing money from our children and grandchildren to pay for this stimulus package. To strengthen our economy, the stimulus package has to help entrepreneurs and small businesses make investments this year that will create new jobs.”
Congressman Bartlett is a former small business owner and a senior member of the House Small Business Committee.
